The Gift of Formation and Fraternity
Bishop Emilio shares reflections on journey to Italy in this week's Florida Catholic.

The days from September 2–13, 2026, were a blessed time of grace, formation, fraternity, and renewed hope. I return to the Diocese of Venice with a grateful heart.
Upon arriving in Rome, the Capuchin brothers, Father Diogo Escudero and Brother Aklilu Petros, met me at the airport and generously accompanied me throughout my stay. On the first day, Father Diogo and I visited the tombs of St. Peter and St. Paul to pray for the faithful of the Diocese of Venice. The pastoral visits were still fresh in my heart, and I was grateful to entrust our priests, deacons, religious, and lay faithful to the intercession of these great Apostles.
The first 10 days were dedicated to the new bishops formation course (Annual Formation Course for New Bishops from Around the World, with its theme: “In Christ, Guardians of the ‘Magnifica Humanitas’ in Times of Transformation”), which brought together approximately 150 bishops from around the world who had been ordained during the past year. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet bishops from different cultures and pastoral situations and to recognize the unity of our vocation and mission in the Church.
The course provided an extraordinary opportunity to listen, learn, reflect, and share. Seventeen formal presentations were given by bishops, archbishops, and cardinals, addressing various dimensions of the vocation and ministry of a bishop. Each presentation was followed by questions and discussion, allowing the new bishops to share their pastoral experiences, hopes, and concerns.
The seventeenth, and final, presentation was given by the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV on Sept. 10, 2026. He reminded the new bishops that our ministry begins with discipleship and that we must remain close to Jesus through prayer, Scripture, and the Eucharist. He called us to embody the compassionate heart of Christ, to love and support our priests, to remain close to our people, and to serve with pastoral charity.
This encounter was especially memorable because the Holy Father opened the floor for the new bishops to ask questions and share their thoughts. For more than an hour, we experienced a genuine closeness and fraternity with the Successor of Peter. It was deeply encouraging and reminded us that the episcopal ministry carries great responsibility and none of the bishops are alone.
The daily celebration of Mass was at the heart of the entire course. Each day, a bishop, archbishop, or cardinal offered the homily, grounding our reflections in the Eucharist. This was an important reminder that episcopal ministry ultimately flows from communion with Christ. Everything we do as bishops must begin and end at the altar. Before we can shepherd others, we must first allow ourselves to be shepherded by Christ.
Formation and Fraternity in Assisi
From Rome, the journey continued to Assisi for the gathering of Capuchin bishops from September 10–13. These days were a natural continuation of the formation received in Rome, with a particular emphasis on our identity and vocation as Capuchins.
To gather in Assisi was itself a profound grace. We were in the places made holy by the lives of St. Francis and St. Clare. Our time together included prayer, meditation, Eucharistic celebrations, and formation sessions focused on the responsibilities of episcopal ministry and the importance of remaining faithful to the charism we received as Capuchin friars.
On the final day of the gathering in Assisi, the Capuchin Cardinal Sean O’Malley celebrated Sunday Mass and preached on Matthew 18:21–35, teaching that a defining mark of a Christian is the willingness and then the ability to forgive one’s brother from the heart. He shared examples of the genuine fruit of forgiveness and reconciliation. This was a profound teaching that can only truly be lived out through the action of the Holy Spirit. We pray for this grace and for each other.
Perhaps the greatest gift of Assisi was the fraternity we experienced. We shared meals, prayer, and many conversations. These ordinary moments became important occasions of grace.

Mass of Remembrance at Ascension
Bishop Emilio will celebrate a Catholic Mass of Remembrance on Monday, September 28 at 9:00 a.m. on the grounds of The Church of the Ascension, 6025 Estero Blvd, Fort Myers Beach. The date marks the fourth anniversary of Hurricane Ian's devastating impact on Southwest Florida, and Fort Myers Beach, including the destruction of the Church of the Ascension. Celebrated by Bishop Emilio, the Mass of Remembrance will be concelebrated by priests from the surrounding area, including Msgr. Stephen McNamara, Church of the Resurrection, Fr. Lorenzo Gonzalez, St. Columbkille Parish, Fr. Jarek Sniosek, St. Leo the Great Parish and Fr. Bill Adams, former Pastor of Ascension Parish, and others. All are welcome!

The Year of St. Francis
Bishop Frank J. Dewane designated St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Grove City to serve as a pilgrimage destination for the Diocese of Venice in the extraordinary Jubilee Year of St. Francis, honoring St. Francis of Assisi on the 800th anniversary of his death. All are encouraged to make a pilgrimage to the Parish during this Jubilee Year for a unique experience of encounter, prayer and renewal. The Church and its Poor Clare Adoration Chapel are open to welcome pilgrims every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and at other times by arrangement.
Background
By decree of the Apostolic Penitentiary issued on January 10, 2026, at the request of Pope Leo XIV, the Church has solemnly proclaimed a special Year of St. Francis of Assisi, running from January 10, 2026, to January 10, 2027. This Jubilee Year commemorates the 800th anniversary of the passage into Heaven of Saint Francis of Assisi (1226), one of the most beloved saints in Christian history. The Papal Decree emphasizes the enduring relevance of St. Francis in today’s world. His radical Gospel life – marked by poverty, humility, peace, and love for creation – continues to speak powerfully to a humanity wounded by division, violence, and indifference. The Holy Father invites all the Faithful to rediscover Francis not merely as a gentle lover of nature, but as a man conformed to Christ Crucified, whose life was a living proclamation of the Gospel, and a model of Christ’s peace.
A Call to Prayer: Pray for our bishops! The Shepherd Project, an initiative of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion, asks all to pray for the shepherds across America on designated dates. As our world faces a shortage of peace and an increase in division and attacks within our families and the Church, our Bishops are facing extreme challenges. This is why they need our prayers, now more than ever, for the grace necessary to heroically lead people of faith in these uncertain times. This is what inspired the Shrine’s Shepherd Project – a season of prayer for each and every Bishop across the United States. The above graphic shows the prayer calendar for our Florida bishops; it is asked that all pray for Bishop Emilio Biosca, O.F.M. Cap., on Wednesday, September 23, the Memorial of Saint Pius of Pietrelcina, better known as the Feast of Saint Padre Pio! Eucharistic Rosary Congress - The annual Diocese of Venice Eucharistic Rosary Congress will be held October 3-9, 2026. This year's theme is My spirit rejoices in God my Savior. At Parishes throughout the Diocese, the Eucharistic Rosary Congress will usually begin with the celebration of daily Mass and end with Mass at the same time the next day; in the 24 hours between the two Masses, there is perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, with the five decades of the Rosary being prayed every hour. Many parishes will also have the Sacrament of Penance available. This abundance of prayer will undoubtedly draw from the Lord many graces upon our families, the Diocese, the Universal Church, the nation, and the world. Check your local parish for details!

The cost for all the classes is $35, which includes the book. Students who register and attend a minimum of six classes at one of the participating parishes or online using our APP will qualify to receive a Diocesan Certification. In October, the Catholic Church in the United States celebrates Respect Life Month, and the first Sunday of October - this year October 4 - is designated as Respect Life Sunday. This year's theme for Respect Life month is “Mary, Mother of Life,” demonstrating how the life of the Blessed Mother teaches us to respect each human life in every stage and circumstance.
A brief reflection on this theme is shared in the attachments below, in both English and Spanish and can be shared in parish bulletins and other parish communications. It could also be used as the basis for a homily, talk, or small group discussion at parish pro-life meetings, in high school religion classes, or simply among friends.

40 Days for Life - The 40 Days for Life campaign, which begins Sept. 23 and continues through Nov. 1, brings together people of faith from all walks of life who share a commitment to protecting human life through peaceful prayer and public witness. As another campaign begins, organizers extend an invitation to Catholics and all people of goodwill to participate, regardless of experience.
Whether joining a kickoff rally, praying outside a local abortion facility, or offering prayers from home, every participant becomes part of a larger effort to build a culture of life. Since 40 Days for Life began, 26,546 mothers have chosen life for their children; 279 abortion workers have quit their jobs; and 187 abortion centers where 40 Days for Life vigils have been held have gone out of business.

The goal is to have 4,000 participants to span the distance (about 10 feet apart). Life Chain is a solemn dignified gathering where participants stand together along the street holding signs with pro-life messages. Signs will be provided on the day of the event. This event is a unique and powerful opportunity for citizens of Florida to come together in support of life at all stages. Your presence will help to promote a culture of life and respect for all human beings; encourage a sense of community and solidarity among participants; provide a visible and impactful witness to the values we hold dear; and engage in a peaceful and non-confrontational demonstration of support for life. What is “Priesthood Sunday”? Priesthood Sunday is a special day set aside to honor the priesthood. It is a day to reflect upon and affirm the role of the priesthood in the life of the Church. In the Diocese of Venice, the Venice Diocesan Council of Catholic Women offers a unique opportunity to all to honor your priest, and to support our future priests, on this special day. Request a Mass - The practice of requesting a Mass to be offered for the needs of a specific person, for a special intention, or in thanksgiving is a wonderful part of Catholic tradition. To have a Mass celebrated for a special occasion, on behalf of a family member/friend, or a deceased loved one the donation amount is $10.00 per Mass.
